What to know: Tucked into St Mary Overie’s Dock near Borough Market floats The Golden Hinde, a full sized, sea worthy wooden reconstruction of the Tudor galleon captained by Sir Francis Drake. Between 1577 and 1580, Drake circumnavigated the globe aboard the original flagship, claiming new maritime territories and raiding treasure ships along South America.
This replica was constructed in Devon and launched in 1973. It has completed its own circumnavigation of the world, logging more than 100,000 miles under sail. Today, it serves as an interactive living museum where children can explore the low timber decks, steer the tiller, inspect gunpowder barrels, and learn about life aboard a 16th century vessel from costumed Tudor educators.
